The best apps that make you earn your screen time, from friction to sweat
Screen-time apps have quietly split into two schools. The first school adds friction: pauses, delays, breathing exercises, blocked schedules. The second school makes you pay for your scroll with something real, usually exercise. Both work. They work on different people, and picking the wrong school for your personality is why most people churn off these apps in two weeks.
We build MyRepsCount, one of the exercise-school apps below. Details on the others come from their sites and store listings as of August 2026.
The friction school
one sec
one sec intercepts the app open and makes you take a breath first. That sounds too gentle to work, but it targets the exact mechanism of doomscrolling, the automatic open you did not decide to do, and it has peer-reviewed research behind it. If your problem is unconscious opens rather than long sessions, start here.
ScreenZen
ScreenZen does delays and intention prompts, is highly configurable, and is free with no subscription, which makes it the value pick of the friction school. If you want to try friction before paying anyone, this is the one.
Opal
Opal is the heavy machinery: scheduled sessions, deep Screen Time integration, detailed analytics, and a Deep Focus mode that removes your ability to cheat. It is also about $99.99 a year. Reviewers consistently rank it the most capable blocker, and it earns that price only if you have already failed with the gentler tools.
Forest
Forest gamifies focus sprints: stay off your phone and a tree grows, quit early and it dies. One-time price, charming, great for students and work sessions. Its weakness is durability; reviewers note the novelty fades faster than the other approaches once the trees stop feeling precious.
The sweat school
The exercise-gated apps flip the deal. Instead of making scrolling slightly harder, they make it cost something your body benefits from. The camera verifies the exercise, so there is no honor system. The scroll becomes a reward you earned, and as a side effect you did a workout.
MyRepsCount (ours)
Our Focus feature blocks the apps you choose until you have worked out, and you set the bar: any completed workout, a rep goal, or a minutes goal, on the days you pick. The camera counts over 60 exercises, so the unlock workout can be real training, and the blocking plus the counting are free on iPhone and Android. It is the only app in this post that is a full workout app underneath the blocker.
PushScroll
The name brand of the sweat school, with the cleanest exchange rate ever put in an app: one pushup, one minute. Subscription required after the trial. We compared it in depth in PushScroll vs RepScroll.
RepScroll
The strictest of the exercise blockers, with Hard Lock and PIN protection. iPhone only, four exercises, premium tiers from $3.99 a week. If you know you will look for loopholes, its lock is the hardest to pick.
Which school are you?
Be honest about your failure mode. If you open Instagram forty times a day without deciding to, friction wins: one sec or ScreenZen, then Opal if you need the hard version. If your problem is hour-long sessions once you are in, a pause will not save you; a price will. That is the sweat school: any of the exercise blockers will do it, and ours does it free, on both platforms, with a workout app attached: App Store / Google Play.
You can also run both schools at once: friction on the apps you merely overuse, an exercise gate on the one that owns you. Nothing about these tools is mutually exclusive.
